Brendan Fernandes' IN TWO

Chicago-based artist Brendan Fernandes (b. 1979, Kenya) presents a new dance performance series in response to the Pulitzer’s exhibition, Scott Burton: Shape Shift. Fernandes will choreograph a series of duets that engage with Scott Burton’s “furniture sculptures”—artworks that were originally made for public use. Like Burton (1939–1989), Fernandes will draw on gestures and signaling within gay cruising culture as part of an ongoing exploration of queer camouflage, visibility, and embodiment. In addition to the performances, Fernandes will create curtains and props to be installed in the galleries and activated by dancers during performances. Fernandes’ project highlights the continued impact of Burton’s legacy on artists today.

Performance dates:

Sep 7, 2024

Nov 8 & 9, 2024

Jan 17 & 18, 2025

Thank you to dancers Sergio Camacho (Courtesy of the Saint Louis Dance Theatre), Xenia Mansour, Christopher Salango, and Carly Vanderheyden.

Thank you to The Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philadelphia for co-commissioning the curtains and pillows. A companion set of curtains and pillows by Fernandes is on view as part of their exhibition Soft/Cover, November 14, 2024, through 2025. Burton’s Window Curtains (1978) are on loan from The Fabric Workshop and Museum and are on view on the Pulitzer’s lower level.

HIVEWILD Presents: premiere of "a sigh of origin"

a sigh of origin

A SIGH OF ORIGIN IS A DANCE FILM SITUATED WITHIN AN AGING PSYCHE, INVOKING MULTI-DIMENSIONAL EXPERIENCES OF IDENTITY, PERSPECTIVE, AND MEMORY THROUGHOUT A LIFETIME.

THE STORY

A SIGH OF ORIGIN IS A FILM SITUATED WITHIN AN AGING PSYCHE. AS THE NEWEST WORK FROM BROOKLYN-BASED DANCE COMPANY HIVEWILD AND DIRECTOR/CHOREOGRAPHER KATHERINE MAXWELL, ‘A SIGH OF ORIGIN’ INVOKES MULTI-DIMENSIONAL EXPERIENCES OF IDENTITY AND PERSPECTIVE THROUGHOUT A LIFETIME.

WHILE THE FILM’S SUBJECT IS NEVER SEEN, HER MIND IS INHABITED THROUGHOUT, AS THE FILM’S CAST OF TEN EMBODY A LIFETIME OF DISJOINTED LONG-TERM MEMORIES.

AS CHARACTERS DISAPPEAR AND REEMERGE, AND STORYLINES CONVERGE AND SPIN OFF, LINEAR NARRATIVES ARE UPENDED IN FAVOR OF MORE KALEIDOSCOPIC EXPERIENCES OF CONSCIOUSNESS.

A SIGH OF ORIGIN WAS INSPIRED BY TIME SPENT BETWEEN THE DIRECTOR AND HER GRANDMOTHER, WHO HAS DEMENTIA, AND SEEKS TO EXPLORE HOW THE BRAIN AND BODY STORE MEMORY BEYOND THE REACHES OF THE THINKING MIND.

HOLDTIGHT Presents "when the blossom passes what remains"

  • The Olympic Auditorium Complex (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

when the blossom passes, what remains? is HOLDTIGHT’s latest site-specific performance piece. This work considers how humans can better live in holistic balance with the earth by tuning in and tending to our own and collective bodies. Combining embodied movement, live music, personal narrative, ritual, sustainable scenography, and plant-based elixirs,  this work uses the container of the show to practice reciprocity. Through psychological, ecological, somatic, and artistic research, we explore how our connection to our own bodies -- in the physical, emotional, and spiritual senses -- mirrors our connection to the earth. Participatory and intimate, this piece delves into how care, attunement, collective listening, and healing come into play when we are navigating eco-psychology.

All aspects of this work's production are as intentionally sourced, utilized, and recycled as possible, to ensure that the lifecycle of this project is continuous and thoughtful.

Hivewild: Dreaming of you always

DUETING

Katherine Maxwell (Hivewild) and Caitlin Adams (formerly HeidCo) invite you to join us for a duet of duets presented by Arts on Site.

Friday, March 18
Shows at 6:30 PM & 8:30 PM

Thursday, March 24
Shows at 6:30 PM & 8:30 PM

Arts on Site
Studio 3R

12 St Marks Place
New York, NY 10003

Adams will be presenting Arrow of Time, a dance-performance work with two characters who have been placed in a world as the last and only inhabitants. These characters embody a range of experiences from instinctual, learning how to walk, to the impossible, learning how to fly. Over time, two characters grow increasingly more human as they become emotionally and physically dependent on each other.

Maxwell will be presenting Dreaming of you always, a glimpse into the significant moments in partnership- those that leave a lasting impression on ourselves or a partner. First constructed in 2021 as a performance component for Travis Emery Hackett’s solo photography exhibition, this work represents- whether lost or continued- an intense and passionate connection felt with another while questioning the probability of that connection’s longevity.

HOLDTIGHT Presents: "What Keeps You Going?"

HOLDTIGHT Presents: "What Keeps You Going?"

From September 15-October 2nd, HOLDTIGHT will premiere a new Nourishment production at the cell theatre in NYC. As current resident artists at the cell, HOLDTIGHT’s new work will explore the question: What Keeps You Going? in a live, in-person immersive dance theater production.

FOR TICKETS:

http://www.thecelltheatre.org/holdtight

Through an organic blend of dance, live music, storytelling, structural & mental disruptions, and video design, What Keeps You Going? is an intimate & participatory performance that invites audiences through three levels of the cell’s historic townhouse. Time, defined as the indefinite continued progress of existence, is so often measured in homogenized moments that it is easy to forget that every moment in time exists as a wholly unique instance.By conforming to the constraints of time, it can feel like one is falling into slow stagnation or an extreme acceleration. What does that mean in terms of overcoming the linear nature of time and finding purpose? What Keeps You Going? delves into the paradoxical aspects of how we navigate the present moment whilst learning from our past and preparing for our future.

What Keeps You Going? is directed and conceived by HOLDTIGHT founder Gwendolyn Gussman in collaboration with artists Nico Gonzales, Emily Haughton, Dervla Carey-Jones, and Xenia Mansour. Featuring Music and Sound Design by Grammy-award winning saxophonist Johnny Butler, Scenography by Anna Driftmier, Lighting Design by Aja M. Jackson, and Video Design by Alex Taylor. HOLDTIGHT was last seen at the cell in 2019 for It’s Not What You Think inspired by the work of Mikel Glass.

Performance Details:

-When: 7:30pm; September 15--19, September 22-26, September 29-October 2nd

-Where: The Cell Theatre, 338 W. 23rd Street, New York, NY. 10011

- Price: $50-75 (with previews on 9/15 & 9/16 for $20)
